The Hidden Spirituality Of The Dark Crystal

The Dark Crystal

So I know this series is called Hidden Spirituality but as many of you in the comments have pointed out… At some point we have to be honest with ourselves and acknowledge that especially with some of these movies, we really ought to name it “Obvious Spirituality”, and the Dark Crystal is definitely one of those kinds of films.

Also - let it be known that this episode will specifically be exploring the original film of The Dark Crystal, we are not going to be getting into the Netflix Prequel Series at this time, although I’m certain that it would make for some great content. And to that end, Spoiler Warning, but you knew that already, didn’t you?

So in essence, The Dark Crystal is basically an hour and a half long magical adventure through a world of mysticism, alchemy, and astrology - in a world entirely different from our own, and yet a beautiful reflection of our own inner consciousness.

The story begins by...

The Hidden Spirituality of Lucy

 How does one describe Lucy?

What begins as a story of a woman with an average quite human consciousness and a short-lived boyfriend with a pretty sweet hat, very quickly transforms into a film about ascension.

So, as always - spoiler alert. Now let’s get into it!

The idea of Lucy is the rapid escalation from a low level of consciousness. It progressively moves into trying to describe what might happen if someone was to experience transcendent superconsciousness and unlocking new powers that come with it. It is a commentary both on theoretical human evolution and psychedelics very much psychedelics, LSD, to be specific. In a way, the whole movie seems to be based around it, allow me to explain.

In the opening narrative, we see cell mitosis, followed by a shot of Lucy - the 3.2 million-year-old first “early human,” Australopithecus, before quickly cutting to Lucy - the 25-year-old woman studying in Taipei.

Before we even go further - it...

The Hidden Spirituality of Iron Man

Iron Man...

The film that single-handedly kick-started the MCU and brought us nearly 20 movies in only ten years! What’s more curious, that while the movie may feature flashy egocentric concepts of luxury, explosions, random sex, and Tony's pompous attitude, under its surface is a film with a depth of hidden spiritual ideas.

Perhaps one of the most fundamental of these spiritual concepts would be the ascension of Tony from the lower centers, to the higher ones. The basic idea being that the smaller centers are governed by survival, sex, and willpower. From the very beginning, Tony is epitomized by these traits, and we see this over and over in how he treats everyone. From Rhode to Pepper to Obidiah and, of course, Christine Everhart from Vanity Fair. To him, people are just things that he can use to feel better about himself or to do the things for him that he doesn’t want to do so that he can focus on whatever he wants.

His mindset is demonstrated clearly...

The Hidden Spirituality of Interstellar

Ahhh, interstellar, a simple classic movie, about a farmer his family Some dust and a transdimensional interstellar quantum gravitational space travel.

Seriously!

So the basis of this movie is that in the future, the earth has become a global dustbowl due to humanity being excessive. It’s mostly a commentary on monoculture farming, which we’ve explored in our food series. Primarily by farming the same thing on the same land over and over, you lose the majority of your nutrient base due to lack of plant diversity. You also lose your root system, making it easy for winds to pick up dirt and throw it for miles and miles. Interstellar begins with a warning - if we continue living the way we are, this could be our world.

So the film introduces us to our main characters, Cooper, or Coop for short, and his daughter Murph. Now, there’s an interesting thing in these opening scenes, where we see Murph's teacher talking to Coop about his daughter's progress in...

The Hidden Spirituality of Final Fantasy 7

Final Fantasy 7 Heralded by millions today as one of the greatest videogames ever made. There is just no describing how potent this game is, no way to express the sheer impact honestly it’s had on the landscape of videogames and culture today, and how this game single-handedly transformed the art of storytelling and videogames forever.

Now, this video is intended to be an exploration of the hidden spirituality Within FF7, but to make it accessible for people who might not have heard of it, allow me to provide an incredibly brief overview of the plot. Fair warning - This will spoil everything.

The game begins as a simple story of an ex-soldier named Cloud Strife whose bleh disposition towards the world gets him a job as a mercenary running a bombing run of a large reactor within a large city, which is draining the planets life-force energy. The town is owned and operated by the Shinra corporation, using the power to fuel the city, make bank, and support the evil...

The Hidden Spirituality of Avatar

Avatar! Considered by many to be one of the most groundbreaking movies of our generation, it stands as a testament for how far our technology has come, allowing us to create and bear witness to new worlds as we’ve never seen them before. Yet, under the surface of the technological achievement of this film lies an intense undercurrent of hidden spirituality.

At the highest level of the movie, we see the story play out as a narrative between the dualistic nature of our human consciousness, and our relationship with our planet. You can describe this duality in ways such as Organic vs. Mechanic, the soft vs. The hard, the light vs. The dark, the enlightened vs. The asleep or alien vs. the native.

This dualistic theme is introduced to us by a look at how the human world has evolved, and a reflection of the same consciousness we have today that got us there. People are cold, and the earth has been polluted, there is no sign of things improving. Those in power are using...

The Hidden Spirituality of Perks of Being a Wallflower

The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a story about the infinite layers between a person's ego and a person's soul, and in that, the self-discovery and expression of the soul through the connection we have with each other. Much of this coming of age story is centered around being an outcast in a world of sameness, telling us of uniqueness, individuality, and that each of us has the potential to live our best lives if we can just get out of our own way. While the story is based in 1991, it relates very well with most demographics of the last 40 years, minus all the mix-tapes, as much of the message is universal to our human consciousness today.

The story was both written and directed by Steven Chbosky, for both the novel and the screenplay - and while generally, we’ll be focusing on the movie, for those interested - the book adds many dimensions to the story that we don’t see in the film. With that, here’s your Spoiler Alert, and here we go!

The film opens and...

The Hidden Spirituality of Cloud Atlas

Cloud Atlas tells the story of the soul. It is a story rich in symbolism and wisdom teachings, which spans across lifetimes of human experience. It was initially written by David Mitchell and adapted for the screen by the Wachowskis and Tom Tykwer. While this video will be exploring the film, we extend gratitude to the author for the original and complete telling in its written form.

It is a narrative on how the actions of individual lives impact one another in the past, present, and future. We see souls shaped through time, in one lifetime a killer, and later, a hero, and how both the virtues and ignorance within the collective consciousness can ripple across centuries to inspire social systems and collective transformation.

The entire movie seems to bear a profound spiritual truth that we find in the Emerald Tablets of Thoth. He writes, “ You have risen from a state that was little above the beast, until now of all humankind, you are the greatest. Yet before you were...
